The ATO states plainly that these rates do not include the Medicare levy of 2%. Our calculator adds it, which is why our total can be higher than a calculator that only applies the table.

Medicare levy

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income, on top of income tax. It funds part of the cost of Medicare. A reduction applies for lower-income earners, which can reduce the levy to nil — this calculator does not model that, so treat the levy figure as the full 2%.

A separate Medicare levy surcharge can also apply if you do not hold private hospital cover and earn above certain thresholds. That is different from the 2% levy and is not included here.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Australian income tax rates for 2026–27?

For 2026–27 a resident taxpayer pays: Nil up to $18,200; 15c for each $1 from $18,201 to $45,000; $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 from $45,001 to $135,000; $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 from $135,001 to $190,000; and $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 above $190,000. These rates do not include the 2% Medicare levy.

Does this include the Medicare levy?

Yes — this calculator shows the income tax, the 2% Medicare levy and the total. The ATO’s published rate table does not include the Medicare levy, which is why some calculators understate the total. There is also a low-income reduction of the levy that can reduce it to nil, which this calculator does not model.

What is the tax-free threshold?

In 2026–27 it is $18,200. Below that you pay no income tax. The Medicare levy still applies above a lower threshold, and is reduced for low-income earners.

How is tax calculated — on my whole income or in bands?

In bands (marginal). Only the income above each threshold is taxed at that band’s rate. Being "in the 30% bracket" does not mean 30% of everything you earn.

Is this the same as my take-home pay?

Not exactly. Take-home pay also depends on your employer’s withholding, HELP/HECS repayments, salary sacrifice, super, and any offsets or deductions you claim. This calculator shows the tax itself.

How accurate is this calculator?

It applies the ATO’s published resident tax rates, checked 11 October 2026. It does not account for offsets, deductions, the Medicare levy reduction for low-income earners, the surcharge, or non-resident rates.
